Winona Middle School
6th Grade Band
Rules and Procedures
1.) Be in your seat with a pencil and ready to play at the designated time.
2.) No talking when the director is “On the podium”, or working with a different section of the band.
3.) Show respect for yourself, others, and all equipment.
4.) Be responsible for yourself and your music/instrument.
5.) Participate to the best of your ability!
Student Conduct
1.) The student will be given a verbal warning and asked to change the behavior.
2.) The student will be removed from the classroom to discuss the reason for removal. The student will then be allowed to return to the classroom.
3.) If this discussion does not resolve the behavior problem, or if the student is in flagrant violation of policies outlined in the student handbook, the student will be removed from the classroom by the safety specialist. Appropriate procedures, as stated in the student handbook, will have to be followed before the student is allowed to return to the classroom.
Grading Policy
Lessons are an extremely important part of the student’s development on his/her instrument. Regular, prepared attendance is a high percentage of the student’s grade. In addition, adherence to the rehearsal rules and procedures, as well as rehearsal musicianship is also reflected in the grade.
Each student will have a 15 minute lesson once a week. Each lesson is worth 10 points. The student must bring his/her lesson book to every lesson as well as a weekly practice record that is signed by a parent or guardian.
Lesson points will be earned as follows:
Student attends the lesson prepared: 8 points
Signed practice card turned in: 2 points
Weekly practice card turned in but not signed: 1 point
Missed lessons are either Excused or Unexcused. Excused lessons will not affect a student’s grade.
Excused lessons include: Absence from school; doctor, dentist, or orthodontist appointments; school assembly or activity day; field trip; test or quiz during lesson time; project that requires the student to stay in class; or snow day. Three excused absences are allowed per semester, after that they need to be made up.
The student is expected to show his/her lesson instructor a signed logbook, stating the reason for the absence, in order to receive credit for the lesson. The student is still expected to turn in his/her signed practice card. Only three excused lessons are allowed per semester.
Unexcused missed lessons will lower a student’s grade. Students with unexcused missed lessons can make up the lesson.
Make-up lessons will be offered before and after school on certain days. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule a make-up lesson!
Every *Wednesday morning at 8:30 I offer a rehearsal for 6th graders. This rehearsal can be counted towards a missed lesson. I encourage students to come to as many Wednesday sectionals as they can!
Musicianship Skills in Rehearsals
Each student will receive daily credit for musicianship skills in band rehearsals. Students will be evaluated in the following areas:
Attendance
Respect shown to self, others and equipment.
Being prepared (Do you have your instrument, music, and pencil?)
Attentiveness during rehearsal.
Attitude towards instruction.
Proper storage of instruments.
Concerts
Concert attendance is required. Concerts are viewed as the final step in the learning process. They are the culmination of all the hard work that goes on, day after day, in rehearsals and in individual practice time. Teamwork and responsibility to one another is stressed. Most importantly, concerts give students the opportunity to show others what they have accomplished. A student is only excused from a concert due to illness or family emergency.
Concert Dress
Girls should wear a dress, skirt (should be below the knees when seated) or dress slacks and blouse.
Boys should wear a shirt and tie with dress pants. Any color is fine.
